A little 3-year-old girl came to my house the other day. It had been a while since I had spent much time with a 3-year-old. I had forgotten how many questions they ask.
She began by asking where my little girl was. I told her my “little” 13-year-old was still in bed. She wanted to see. So I showed her. After all, it was 10 AM. She walked over to my daughter’s bed and said, “Little girl, why are you still in bed?” I couldn’t help but laugh.
A little while later, we went outside. I had on a pair of navy blue fuzzy leggings and I must have brushed up against something and got dirt on them. She brushed the dirt off and asked me if I ever wash my pants.
Then we went up to the new garage we are building. The sheetrock was being finished and it was a big mess. She was quick to ask me why my house was so dirty.
I can’t help but laugh at all the things this little girl called me and my family out on that day. She certainly “called it like she saw it”.
It made me think…
I wonder when we stopped seeing it? Sin that is.
There’s something about the innocence of a child that puts a new perspective on things. I remember when my daughter was younger and I taught her not to say bad words. And then we were around someone who said a bad word and she was quick to confront them, “Why you say bad words?” To tell the truth, I hadn’t even noticed.
Another time, my husband and I were watching a movie, one of my favorites that I’d seen at least a half a dozen times, “Pretty Woman”. Our daughter was in the room. We thought nothing of it. Until… well, do you realize how much of that movie is about sex? I mean the lead character is a prostitute for goodness sakes! But, until our child was in the room, neither of us had noticed.
I wonder when we stopped seeing it?
Sin that is.
When did sin become normal? When did sin become ok? When did sin become something that we say and do and watch and hear without notice? When did we become numb to right and wrong? To good and bad?
Perhaps more importantly, when will we open our eyes? When will we choose to see sin for what it is? Sin. When will we choose to change the channel? Change the station? Change our choices? Change our lives.
Will it be today?
I encourage you this week to examine the details of your life. If you had a child walking around with you, would they call you out on anything? If so, you may need to reconsider some of the choices you’re making. Be honest with yourself and ask the Lord to give you the heart of a child again. It’s one of the most mature things you can do.
“And He said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’” Matthew 18:3 (NIV)
Heavenly Father, Lord, open our eyes to the influences around us. Help us to make better decisions for ourselves. Help us to fill our minds, our homes, our lives with sights, and sounds that glorify You.
Amen.

Thank you for that Teresa that really opened up my eyes and it makes me think. Again thank you for the eye and heart opener.
