The other day I was scrolling through social media and came across a post that posed this question: “If asked, what would the people who know you say you love?” The answers varied greatly. Some people listed foods such as ice cream, pizza, or coffee. Others said their family, friends, and even sports teams. At quick glimpse it looks like just a silly fun question, but it really got me thinking what would others say about me? Would they mention my love of chocolate or that I love spending time with my family? These are all great things! There is really nothing wrong with enjoying a hot cup of coffee or some much needed time with a family member or even watching a football game, but are these the first things I want people to think of when they think about me? More importantly do they know I love Jesus? They should if I am living a faith-filled life.
Our lives should reflect our faith. The things we say and do each day are a reflection of who we are and what is important to us.
1 John 2:6 “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” If we are claiming faith in God, then we ought to walk in the same way Christ walked. Obviously we are not perfect and there are and will be times we say or do something that may not be exactly Christ- like, but this should be an exception not the rule. When people think about us and who we are they should be able to see through not only our words, but also our actions that we are followers of Christ.
In Ephesians 5: 1 we are instructed to be imitators of God as beloved children. This makes me think of how young children will imitate their parents.
They love and trust their parents so much that they want to be just like them. They want to wear their clothes, drink their coffee, and use the same phrases. Of course occasionally a word we said in front of them that we don’t want them repeating will come out and usually at the most inopportune time. We need to imitate God the same way our children strive to imitate us. If we are living our lives in a way that reflects Christ and we are being imitators of God then we know our children as well as the people we interact with each day are seeing God’s love reflected through us.
So take a minute and reflect on who you are and who you want to be. When people who know you are asked what you love, what will they say? What is most important in your life? Are you being an imitator of God or is something else taking precedence in your life. I know that I want my life to reflect Christ and his love for me, but I am a work in progress and have to remind myself each day that my life should be a reflection of
God’s love.
