Living under the rule of Babylon, Daniel maintained his commitment to God’s commandments, praying openly and faithfully each day. This consistency in faith prepared him for the great test that awaited him in the lion’s den.
Even when threatened with death for praying to God, Daniel didn’t waver. King Darius, though reluctant, was forced to throw Daniel into the pit of lions. His seal, a mark of the unbreakable Medo-Persian law, closed off any chance for human rescue. Yet, Daniel’s prayer life had taught him that God alone was his refuge and protector.
In many ways, courage in the face of trials, like Daniel’s, grows in the “prayer closet” before it’s tested in the “lion’s den.” Whether facing an impending job loss, strained relationships, or difficult health diagnoses, when you keep close to God, His strength and peace become your foundation.
Daniel as a Reflection of Jesus’ Journey
A unique aspect of Daniel’s story is how it mirrors Jesus’ life and resurrection. Both Daniel and Jesus were innocent, wrongly accused, and cast into pits of death—a lion’s den and a tomb, respectively. Just as Daniel was placed in the pit and sealed with the king’s signet, Jesus’ tomb was also sealed by Roman authority. Both times, though, these seals were no match for God’s power. The following morning, Daniel emerged unharmed, much like Jesus would rise three days later, victorious over death itself.
These parallels remind us that God’s protection is consistent and unshakable. When we are faithful, even if the world turns against us, God stands by us. This reminder speaks volumes: when we feel abandoned or misunderstood, we can look to Jesus and Daniel for assurance that God’s presence doesn’t falter. While Daniel was eventually buried like any other human, Jesus defeated death permanently, offering all believers eternal life and victory over sin and darkness.
God’s Sovereign Hand – A Constant Comfort in Troubling Times
The story of Daniel repeatedly demonstrates that God’s rule extends beyond the limits of human power. Though Daniel lived in a foreign land, God’s sovereignty was evident in every part of his life. He was raised to a position of influence under multiple kings and prospered even in a kingdom hostile to his faith. When his adversaries planned his downfall, they failed, but not because of his own power—rather, because God intervened.
Similarly, in today’s world, where we can’t control politics, economies, or global crises, we can rely on God’s sovereignty. As in Daniel’s story, God can grant you His favor even amid difficult times, shortages, or seemingly impossible challenges. Faith in God’s ultimate control allows us to live in confidence, knowing that our wellbeing isn’t determined by earthly authorities but by a God who delivers and sustains.
Being a Beacon of Light in Dark Places
Like Daniel, believers today are called to be lights in dark environments. Whether it’s in the workplace, school, or community, God places us in challenging situations to display His truth and grace. Daniel’s courage wasn’t just a personal trait; it was a testimony that impacted those around him. Even King Darius, a pagan ruler, came to see the greatness of God through Daniel’s deliverance, declaring that all should honor the “living God, enduring forever.”
Your faithfulness can inspire others to seek the same hope you hold. Through Daniel’s example, we see that true courage can encourage others to believe, trust, and find their own courage. The willingness to live out one’s faith might invite mockery, as it did for Daniel, but it often invites curiosity and eventually respect as well.
The reality is that God’s favor will often prompt jealousy from those who don’t understand or accept His power. However, just as God elevated Daniel, He can lift you up in your career, relationships, or personal pursuits, and this divine favor will not go unnoticed. Others may ask you where you find strength and peace in times of trouble. Your testimony of faith might be the spark someone else needs to turn to God.

While other kids were playing cops and robbers, Dennis was playing church with his brother, David and sister, Dee. He married his beautiful bride, Sharon in 1973 and began working his way through college, majoring in Biblical Studies at Tomlinson College. He pursued every opportunity for ministry from traveling evangelism to running youth camps to serving as senior pastor in several churches across Tennessee. All while continuing his education and ultimately receiving his Doctor of Philosophy in Ministry Science from Great Plains Baptist Divinity School in 2001.
