The United States is currently full of anger, division, and distrust. We could debate about the issues and the core of the problems here, but that is being played out on social media and news outlets as we speak (all with their own spin). It all boils down to darkness in our world.

The opposite of darkness is light. Light is comfort when our imagination goes wild thinking about what danger could be in the shadows. Light makes us feel safe. And what does the Bible have to say about light? Here are a few examples.

God is described as light and named as the creator of light:

O Lord, you are my lamp. The Lord lights up my darkness. -2 Samuel 22:29

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

-James 1:17

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” -John 8:12

Light exposes our weaknesses and sins:

The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. -Proverbs 20:27

The light disturbs the wicked and stops the arm that is raised in violence. -Job 38:15

Believers are described as walking in the Light:

Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord. -Psalm 89:15

The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day. -Proverbs 4:18

Light and love go hand in hand:

If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble.-1 John 2:9-10

Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth. Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for you are merciful, O Lord. -Psalm 25:7

Lost people have not accepted the Light into their hearts YET:

Wicked people rebel against the light. They refuse to acknowledge its ways or stay in its paths. -Job 24:13

Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.” -John 12:36a

Believers are called to be light to the world:

“You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father.

-Matthew 5:14-16

John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.

-John 1:8

If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light. -Luke 11:36

I want to be a reflection of God and His great love, shining like a light so others can see the way to God! I hope that is your desire as well. Allowing the light of Jesus to flood our souls and move us toward acts of love can change someone’s whole world!

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray you would take over. Let us be so full of Your Light and Your Love that there are no dark corners. Examine our hearts and our motives, expelling any evil thoughts or desires. Let us lovingly go and do good deeds so that others will see You, be saved, and walk-in Your Light! We pray these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen
