I went a couple weeks ago to see a movie with Jessica and London, the movie was Toy Story 4. (I’m going to do my best to keep this spoiler-free, I shouldn’t reveal anything that wasn’t in the trailers.) I grew up on Toy Story, the adventures of Woody, Buzz and their faithful crew entertained me for hours on end but I don’t remember them being as impactful as this sequel was. In Toy Story 4, we are introduced to a new character named Forky, this character masterfully painted a vivid picture of who we believe we are.
If you haven’t seen the trailer, here’s a quick spoiler-free synopsis of the movie. Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang have been donated to a little girl named Bonnie (Happened in Toy Story 3.) She is a little girl about 4 or 5 in age, she adores her toys and the adventures they have! One day she makes a new toy, out of a plastic fork. She names him Forky and loves him dearly. The problem is, Forky doesn’t think he belongs to Bonnie, he thinks he belongs in the trash, after all, he is a disposable piece of silverware,
he believes he is trash.
Disposable. Trash. Useless. Served his purpose. Done. Spent. Cast aside. Looked over. Forgotten. Hurt. Would you ever use any of these words to describe yourself? I have. On more than one occasion. We look at ourselves and believe we are disposable, useless, we are trash. Who could love us? Who would want anything to do with us?
After all, we are just trash.
However, you were crafted by the mighty hand of the Creator of the universe. He created you and He loves you dearly, yet, how often do we continuously return to the trash. Time and time again, we go back to the trash of this world because it is where we think we belong. We think I’m not good enough for anything else.
I might as well go back to the trash where I belong.
We look at ourselves in disgust and believe that we are trash. We look in the mirror and hate what we see looking back at us. As we continually fail, we fall short, we can’t do anything right, we lose meaningful relationship after relationship… we are trash. If we continue to let this world whisper into our ears, it will repeat over and over, “You are trash. You are disposable. You are worthless. You are nothing. You ar…”
You are allowing the wrong voice inside of your head.
Because, like Forky, you have a Creator. He placed your eyes in your head, He attached your arms, legs and gave you the hair on your head. He thoughtfully crafted you together. He put great care into who you are and He loves who you are.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:5
Did you get that? He knew you before you were created, He was thinking about you and who you would be before your parents were conceived. The Creator of the universe knew who you would be long before you did. Why? Because He loves you.
Ephesians 2:10 says For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
You are His masterpiece! Imagine an artist’s masterpiece. It’s his prized possession, he takes more pride in this painting than any other. It’s the one on his mantle, it’s the one he shows off to all his friends.
“Yeah this one, this one is my masterpiece. It’s the best I’ve ever done. Oh man… I can’t tell you how long it took, how long I spent perfecting that one fingertip right there. Man, I spent ages… but look at it, it’s beautiful.”
You are God’s masterpiece! You are set-apart, you are loved, you are adored. God is in heaven going, look at her, look at him. Yeah, I can’t tell you how long I spent thinking about each and every strand of hair, how I intricately formed that fingerprint.
Just wow. Are you as blown away as I am?
Look at them, that’s my masterpiece. The angels are probably tired of hearing your name! But God loves you! It’s no wonder He died for you, how could He not, look at how much He loves you. You are His masterpiece. When this world tells you that you are trash, you tell it to shut up because royalty doesn’t entertain the opinion of trash.
You are not trash, you are a child of the One True King. Royalty is not trash.
