Sometimes, I believe, when God is really trying to teach us something specific, He creates these recurring themes in our lives. For me, this week, it’s been all about camels. Yes, you read that right. Camels.
In the beginning of the week, I was studying the New Testament writer, James and learned that tradition says that James prayed so much that his knees became so calloused that his nickname was “Camel Knees”.
That weekend, Sam preached a message out of the book of Genesis titled, “Water for my Camels, a Love Story”.
But, it’s what happened in the middle of the week that really got me. My husband, Roger, was working at the home of a Pakistani Christian man. They had met a couple of times before and found a common bond in their faith. On this day, the man had a gift and a story for my husband.
He told him that Christians should be like camels. The camel gets on its knees before rising up to start the day. Then he fills himself with a large amount of water and prepares to serve his master and carry the master’s load. Then, at the end of a long, hard day, the camel gets down on his knees before lying down to sleep.
The Pakistani man went on to explain that as Christians, we should start each new day on our knees in prayer; we should fill ourselves with the Living Water as we prepare to serve our Master, and we should end each day on our knees in prayer.
Roger loved this story so much that he dialed my number and asked the man to tell it to me himself.
He waited until he got home to open the gift. Inside was a wooden camel and the kindest card from a man from a different nation, a different background, a different skin color, a different culture…. signed “your brother”.
Yes, he is. Our brother in Christ. All prayerfully working together to serve our Master and carry the load.
Lord, I wanna be a camel.
Don’t you?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank you so much for this Pakistani man and the boldness of his faith. Bless him as he works for You to reach his people. May we never forget his story and may we never stop striving to serve You better.
