Last month I wrote a blog emphasizing the importance of both theology and spirituality. In it, I gave a general overview of each topic, and today I’m going to have a more specific look at the importance of theology itself. So, why is theology important? It only matters that God loves me, right?
Well, it is very important to have a relationship with God. However, a firm foundation is needed to root faith. Studying God’s word provides a more stable foundation.
By studying and pursuing questions that might arise in a walk of faith, the relationship between us and God can grow stronger.
Doubts are important to pursue. Question everything. How can someone defend their faith wholeheartedly if they have doubts they haven’t looked into? The Christian walk is a continual “yes” to God. By studying doubts you might have, you’re saying “yes”. Essentially, you’re telling God “yes, I am not sure about this, but yes I believe in you and I want to pursue you like you pursue me”.
I don’t think anyone will ever know everything there is to know about God, but as the years go on, we can always broaden our understanding of Him. Through theological study, we can grow as Christians.
Without study, we can become stagnant in our faith.
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4
