It’s definitely summertime!  Every day I see people out working in their yards- mowing, weeding, mulching, and spraying.  Some have beautiful yards.  Some are a work in progress.  The fact is, a beautiful yard of lush, green grass doesn’t grow naturally.   Weeds do.  And those who want a beautiful yard, spend a lot of time and effort tending to it.  They plant and water and fertilize the grass and do all they can to fend off the weeds.

I’ll be honest with you, I’m not good at this.  I don’t have a green thumb.  It seems the things I want to grow won’t and the things I don’t want to grow to do.  Which reminds me of something Paul said in the New Testament.

For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.”

Romans 7:19 (NIV)

In life, just like in the yard, we will all have to deal with weeds- those sins that sneak in and try to take over when we’re not looking.  Some weeds even disguise themselves as pretty little yellow flowers and we are hardly even bothered by them until they’ve taken over the entire yard.

You see, our spiritual lives, like our yards, must be cultivated and nourished and watered and tended to.  If not, they will become overgrown and smothered out with weeds.

Do you have a little yellow dandelion growing in your life?  That enjoyable little seemingly harmless sin? Watch out, those seeds scatter fast and it will take hard work and effort to tame them.

Those who have the most success will tell you that it’s best to get into a daily routine.  For a gardener, it’s a daily routine of weeding and watering.  For the Christian it’s the same, weeding out the bad and watering the good.  We do that through spending time with God, reading His Word, and talking with Him in prayer.

“Search me, God, and know my heart;  test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Psalm 139:23-24
